Safety Comparison

For enhanced safety, the front shoulder belts of the Cadillac XT5 are height-adjustable, and the rear seat shoulder belts have child comfort guides to move the belt to properly fit children. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages children to buckle up. The Mercedes GLE has only front height-adjustable seat belts.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The XT5 offers optional Reverse Automatic Braking which use rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The GLE doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

To help make backing safer, the XT5’s optional cross-path warning system uses wide-angle radar in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The GLE doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.

Both the XT5 and the GLE have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height-adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available all-wheel drive, crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems and around view monitors.

Warranty Comparison

Cadillac’s powertrain warranty covers the XT5 2 years and 20,000 miles longer than Mercedes covers the GLE. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 6 years or 70,000 miles. Coverage on the GLE ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

The XT5’s corrosion warranty is 1 year longer than the GLE’s (6 vs. 5 years).

Cadillac pays for scheduled maintenance on the XT5 for 4 years and 50,000 miles. Cadillac will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Mercedes doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the GLE.

There are over 2 times as many Cadillac dealers as there are Mercedes dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the XT5’s warranty.

Engine Comparison

The XT5’s 3.6 DOHC V6 produces 8 more horsepower (310 vs. 302) than the GLE350’s standard 3.5 DOHC V6.

Fuel Economy and Range Comparison

On the EPA test cycle the XT5 gets better fuel mileage than the GLE:

An engine control system that can shut down half of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the XT5’s fuel efficiency. The GLE doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Cadillac XT5 uses regular unleaded gasoline. The GLE requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The XT5 has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The GLE doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Brakes and Stopping Comparison

For better stopping power the XT5’s standard front brake rotors are larger than those on the GLE:

The XT5’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs standard on the GLE350 are solid, not vented.

The XT5 stops much shorter than the GLE:

Tires and Wheels Comparison

The Cadillac XT5’s wheels have 6 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The Mercedes GLE only has 5 wheel lugs per wheel.

Suspension and Handling Comparison

The XT5 4x4 handles at .82 G’s, while the GLE550e 4MATIC pulls only .71 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The XT5 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 2.8 seconds quicker than the GLE550e 4MATIC (27 seconds @ .65 average G’s vs. 29.8 seconds @ .57 average G’s).

Chassis Comparison

The Cadillac XT5 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 650 to 1100 pounds less than the Mercedes GLE.

Passenger Space Comparison

The XT5 has .9 inches more front legroom and 1.1 inches more rear legroom than the GLE.

Cargo Capacity Comparison

Pressing a switch automatically lowers the XT5’s rear seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The GLE doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the XT5 Platinum’s cargo door can be opened and closed just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The GLE doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its cargo door, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

Ergonomics Comparison

The XT5’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge – which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The GLE does not have an oil pressure gauge.

The XT5 Platinum has a standard heads-up display which projects speed and other key instrumentation readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The GLE doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the XT5 has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the GLE only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the XT5 has standard extendable sun visors. The GLE doesn’t offer extendable visors.
